In case you don't realize this by the end of this blog post: I am a huge otaku.
Okay, now that that's out of the way, I have one goal after this class: to gain the Japanese skill necessary to understand the first 45 seconds of the Tatami Galaxy.
Ok, probably not. But, it would not be a lie to say that the initial reason I became interested in studying Japanese was to be able to understand Anime, Manga, and J-pop with no translation.
I first became aware of Anime through Cartoon Network's broadcast of Dragon Ball and Naruto while I was in middle school. Upset at the weekly schedule, I searched for more online and found out that, in Japan, Naruto was over one hundred episodes ahead of the American dub.
Since then, I have broadened my horizons. I started reading manga, learning about Japanese culture (Thanks to professor Bowen-Struyk's Cool Japan class - which I would highly recommend), and listening to J-pop (currently digging ORESKABAND). Being able to understand Japanese would greatly increase my immersion in almost every form of Japanese media.
So, that's pretty much it for this post. Feel free to talk to me if you want to discuss anything about Anime or Japan in general.
Here is a link to my MyAnimeList page so you can see the list of Anime I have watched over the past ~6 years: http://myanimelist.net/profile/MFTerminator
You've got a great taste in anime my friend! I checked out your list and have actually watched a good number of them myself. If you've got the time this semester definitely check out the stuff they have running this season. There are a lot of gems!
ReplyDeleteI actually am watching a fair number of currently airing anime (I just haven't updated my list). What's your favorite so far this season?

ReplyDeleteI love anime too. I would be so lost without the subtitles too! If you haven't seen One Piece I would recommend you do, they're about 700 episodes in and counting.

ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear how anime led you to becoming more interested in Japanese language and culture. Also I love the name of your blog. Are you actually a big Jojo fan?
ReplyDeleteYES! JoJo is amazing. I'm really hyped for the next season.

ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not the only one with a list of every show I've watched (although mine I have on paper at my house). Like Josh, I've watched a good amount of those and they're so good! Also, cool to hear you're digging ORESKABAND. I only know several songs by them but they're awesome! I need to get into them more (as well as many more Japanese bands who I know several songs by).

ReplyDeleteI think its awesome how many people gained an interest in Japanese because of anime. Glad to see I wasn't the only one influenced by Dragon Ball and Naruto.
